Sun Moon Lake, Taiwan

by Nausheen Tareen

For a second, it felt like we had driven into Europe! No wonder it is the most popular honeymoon destination in Taiwan. The tremendously beautiful Sun Moon Lake is located in the heart of the alpine region of ‪‎Taiwan‬ and is their most popular tourist destination! The region has such tremendous natural beauty that one would not feel like leaving and can be safely called the Switzerland of Asia.
The lake, located in Yuchi Township, Nantou County, is the largest in Taiwan and the area around it is inhabited by one of the oldest aboriginal tribes of Taiwan called the Thao tribe. The tiny island in the middle is called Lalu and it is said that the east side of the lake resembles a sun while the west side resembles a moon, hence the name.
Best way to explore this oasis of peace and tranquility is on a bicycle while admiring the incredible views. The cycle track around the lake covers over 30 km and one can easily rent them from the three information centres dotted around the lake or from rental shops and even most hotels keep them for their guests. Happy cycling in this paradise!
